How can a psychologist help you to help your child?

As a parent, when your child or teenager is mentally vulnerable, highly stressed, emotionally unstable or behaving in ways that are hard to understand, an appointment with a psychologist can be a good place to start. You know your child best so – with some psychological guidance – you might be the person most suited to give your child what he or she needs in order to feel better.

The aims and objectives of this parent-focussed approach include building a clear understanding of the child’s problems, what they mean, what might be the cause and what to do about them.

It is very hard for a child or teenager to reach their full potential when they are experiencing mental health and behavioural disturbances. These difficulties hold children back in a few different ways and they can cause extreme stress, not only to the child but to the parents and the whole family. It can be difficult for distressed and vulnerable children to concentrate, think and learn. It can also interfere with their motivation and energy levels, causing them to withdraw into their bedrooms, often behind their screens. It can impact on all their relationships – including their friendships at school. It can also make them hard to live with because of their erratic moods and sometimes their hostility.

If your child or teenager is experiencing problems that you don’t fully understand – or if he or she has already been identified as neurodivergent in some way, including ASD or ADHD – contact us for guidance and support. The journey of parenting a vulnerable child can be complicated. You don’t need to do it alone.
